About the Dan voice
Dan is grounded and casual — a lower, less performed American male voice with the unhurried quality of podcast speech. He suits material that begins in the middle of a thought, and is a poor fit for anything that needs to sound authoritative.
The engine behind this voice
Orpheus is Canopy Labs' Apache-2.0 model built on a three-billion-parameter Llama backbone — a language model taught to speak, unusually good at conversational rhythm and weaker at formal reading. It takes up to 300 characters per request and reads at a fixed pace, and returns MP3 or WAV. Longer text is split at sentence boundaries and joined back into one file.

Nothing. Dan is a free-tier voice: 5,000 characters a day without an account, 10,000 with a free one, and no credit card at any point. Audio downloads as MP3 or WAV and carries a commercial licence, so monetised videos and client work are both fine.
The daily allowance is stated plainly here because several sites in this category advertise "unlimited" and enforce a monthly cap. What is written above is what the server enforces.

Limits
Where Dan is the wrong choice
He is not an authority voice. On anything that needs to sound official or definitive he undersells it, and like Tara he is capped at 300 characters a request with no speed adjustment.
If Dan is not quite right
- Emma — british, calm — the same price as Dan, with a different character. Worth previewing back to back before you commit a whole script to either.
- Sky — expressive, energetic. Reach for this one when Dan is close but the register is not quite right.
- Aria — expressive, multilingual, on the ultra tier. The step up is naturalness under close listening rather than a different personality — worth it for client work, usually not for a first draft.
