About the Adam voice
Adam is direct. He puts weight on the front of a sentence and does not linger at the end of one, which makes him good at material that is telling you something rather than easing you into it. Instructions, updates and summaries land cleanly; he is less suited to reflective writing, where his forward lean can read as impatience.
The engine behind this voice
Kokoro is an 82-million-parameter open-weights model under Apache-2.0 — the cheapest capable engine available by roughly an order of magnitude, which is what makes this tier free at all. It takes up to 5,000 characters per request, adjusts from 0.75× to 1.5×, and returns MP3 or WAV. Longer text is split at sentence boundaries and joined back into one file.

Nothing. Adam is a free-tier voice: 5,000 characters a day without an account, 10,000 with a free one, and no credit card at any point. Audio downloads as MP3 or WAV and carries a commercial licence, so monetised videos and client work are both fine.
The daily allowance is stated plainly here because several sites in this category advertise "unlimited" and enforce a monthly cap. What is written above is what the server enforces.

Limits
Where Adam is the wrong choice
His forward lean is wrong for anything reflective. On a eulogy, a bedtime passage or slow narrative prose he sounds like he wants to get to the end, and no speed setting fixes it — that is where the sentence stress lands, not how fast it goes.
If Adam is not quite right
- Harper — american, clear — the same price as Adam, with a different character. Worth previewing back to back before you commit a whole script to either.
- Tara — conversational, warm. Reach for this one when Adam is close but the register is not quite right.
- Josh — deep, narration, on the ultra tier. The step up is naturalness under close listening rather than a different personality — worth it for client work, usually not for a first draft.
