About the Bella voice
Bella is the voice most people end up keeping. She reads at an even, unhurried pace with the small downward inflection at the end of a sentence that makes narration sound considered rather than announced, and she handles long paragraphs without the sing-song rise that gives synthetic speech away. If you are making something in English and have no particular reason to choose otherwise, start here and change your mind later.
The engine behind this voice
Kokoro is an 82-million-parameter open-weights model under Apache-2.0 — the cheapest capable engine available by roughly an order of magnitude, which is what makes this tier free at all. It takes up to 5,000 characters per request, adjusts from 0.75× to 1.5×, and returns MP3 or WAV. Longer text is split at sentence boundaries and joined back into one file.

Nothing. Bella is a free-tier voice: 5,000 characters a day without an account, 10,000 with a free one, and no credit card at any point. Audio downloads as MP3 or WAV and carries a commercial licence, so monetised videos and client work are both fine.
The daily allowance is stated plainly here because several sites in this category advertise "unlimited" and enforce a monthly cap. What is written above is what the server enforces.

Limits
Where Bella is the wrong choice
Bella is a generalist, and generalists have no edge. On a hard-sell ad read or a line that needs real attack she is simply pleasant, where Sky or Poppy would push. She also has no emotion control — expression comes from your punctuation, so short sentences and full stops do more for her than adjectives do.
If Bella is not quite right
- Miles — american, relaxed — the same price as Bella, with a different character. Worth previewing back to back before you commit a whole script to either.
- Dan — casual, grounded. Reach for this one when Bella is close but the register is not quite right.
- Rachel — calm, professional, on the ultra tier. The step up is naturalness under close listening rather than a different personality — worth it for client work, usually not for a first draft.
