What Turkish asks of a speech engine
Turkish is agglutinative: grammar is built by stacking suffixes onto a root, so a single written word can carry what English needs a clause for. The words get long, and stress normally lands on the final syllable — but a handful of suffixes shift it, so an engine that applies the rule mechanically puts the emphasis in the wrong place on exactly the words where it matters. Vowel harmony means the suffix vowels themselves change to match the root, which is one reason Turkish spelling and Turkish sound track each other closely.
That regularity is the good news: Turkish orthography is nearly one-to-one with pronunciation, so an engine that knows the language rarely mispronounces an ordinary word. The characters have to be right, though. Turkish distinguishes dotted and dotless i (i / ı) and uses ç, ğ, ö, ş and ü, and substituting the plain Latin letter changes the word rather than merely the accent.
