What German asks of a speech engine
German compounds words without spaces, and the results get long: Geschwindigkeitsbegrenzung, Krankenversicherungsgesellschaft. A speech engine has to find the internal boundaries to place stress correctly, and one that fails reads a compound as an undifferentiated run of syllables. This is the most common way German synthesis sounds wrong, and it is worth listening specifically for it in any technical or bureaucratic text.
Sentence structure is the other demand. German routinely sends the verb to the end of a subordinate clause, which means the intonation has to stay open across a long stretch and resolve only at the finish — an engine that drops its pitch early makes the sentence sound finished before it is. Umlauts and ß must be typed properly: writing "ue" for ü or "ss" for ß usually still reads acceptably, but not always, and "Masse" and "Maße" are different words.
