What Portuguese asks of a speech engine
Portuguese has a sound inventory that trips up engines trained mostly on Spanish: nasal vowels written with a tilde (ã, õ) and nasal diphthongs like ão and ões have no Spanish equivalent, and getting them wrong is the fastest way to sound foreign. Unstressed vowels also reduce heavily, which is why Portuguese sounds faster and more closed than Spanish even at the same speaking rate.
The voices here read Brazilian Portuguese. The difference from European Portuguese is not cosmetic — European reduces unstressed vowels much further, uses different pronouns in everyday speech, and places clitics differently — so a Lisbon audience hears it immediately. If your audience is in Portugal, this is worth knowing before you generate a whole project. There is no European Portuguese voice here yet.
Brazilian Portuguese also varies internally, and the voices here read a broadly neutral, media-standard variety rather than a regional one — not carioca, not paulista, not nordestino. For most projects that is what you want. It is worth knowing if your audience is strongly regional, because Brazilians place accents very precisely, and a neutral read is recognisably neutral rather than local. Portuguese likewise runs longer than English, so generate the audio before locking a video edit rather than after.
